1. When sworn translation is required for car registration
Sworn translation is required for rejestracja pojazdu whenever at least one document in the package is issued in a language other than Polish. vehicle registration office (office komunikacji) does not accept a "translation for understanding" — only sworn translation with the seal of a translator listed in the Ministry of Justice register for the relevant language pair (e.g. Ukrainian–Polish or German–Polish).
- Buying a car from a private seller abroad: the package includes translation of the umowa kupna-sprzedaży (purchase contract), dowód rejestracyjny (registration certificate from the country of origin), paszport techniczny or dokument pojazdu (technical passport), plus a power of attorney if someone other than the owner handles the registration.
- Buying from an official dealer or showroom: besides the contract, the faktura VAT (VAT invoice) is translated, and sometimes an umowa komisu (consignment sale agreement). A COC (Certificate of Conformity) for an EU car is usually not translated, but the contract and invoice in a foreign language always are.
- Importing a car from outside the EU (Ukraine, Belarus, USA, UK after Brexit): besides the contract and technical passport, office may request customs documents, proof of akcyza (excise duty) payment and an environmental compliance certificate. All foreign documents require sworn translation.
- Changing the owner of a foreign car already registered in Poland: if the documents from the previous transaction were never submitted, vehicle registration office (office komunikacji) may require their translation during re-registration.
- Registering a car received as an inheritance or gift from abroad: the inheritance or donation deed, the previous owner's death certificate (if applicable), and all vehicle documents are translated.

4. Step by step: from translation to registration plates
Get the document list from vehicle registration office (office komunikacji) at your place of registered residence (meldunek). Call or check the office's website — the requirements for registering a foreign vehicle differ from registering a Polish car.
Gather the originals and prepare legible scans of every page of each document: text, seals, signatures, VIN, stamps. Use PDF or JPG at 300 dpi or higher. A blurry VIN is a common cause of translation delays.
